5 Shows To Watch This Fall

Fall première dates are coming up and there are too many things to watch. No worries. It was extremely difficult but I have narrowed it down to the 5 shows that you must watch.

1. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (FOX) Premieres Tuesday, September 17 @8:30/7:30c.

I have a thing for André Braugher (Men Of A Certain Age, Gideon’s Crossing). I think he’s absolutely wonderful. So when I saw that this show got picked up by Fox, I was excited. The show is a comedy about is about how members of a Brooklyn squad deal with a new very straight-laced and tightly wound police chief played by Braugher. The comedy for most of the show comes from the interplay between Braugher and the squad’s lead cop, played by Andy Samberg (Saturday Night Live), who just can’t seem to adjust. This show looks hilarious and I have read nothing but good things about it. Samberg had many great moments on SNL so he will bring the funny.  I just really want them to let Braugher be great. I need him to be on a show that people give a chance. Hopefully this one is it.

2. The Michael J Fox Show (NBC) Premieres Thursday, September 26 @9/8c.

Michael J. Fox hasn’t been the star of a show since he left Spin City in 2000 because of his Parkinson’s disease. He has done a lot of guest stints on different shows since then; my favorite being his arcs on The Good Wife. It’s nice that now he is returning to television full-time and in something that is really good at, comedy. The new show emulates the actor’s life a bit in that it is about a news anchor at the top of his game who decided to leave his job to spend more time with his family. After being at home for 5 years, his family is ready for him to leave the house and return to work. The cast also includes Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad) and Wendell Pierce (The Wire, Treme, Suits). I saw part of this pilot in one of my classes last semester and I really liked it so I can’t wait to see the finished product.

3. The Originals (CW) Premieres Thursday, October 3 @9/8c

Only two reasons to watch this show – it is a spin-off of the CW’s highest rated show, The Vampire Diaries and centers around the originals Niklaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Rebecca (Claire Holt). The show continues from the backdoor pilot that aired during the fourth season of The Vampire Diaries where Niklaus returns to the supernatural crucible that is the French Quarter of New Orléans and reunites with his former apprentice Marcel. I will be watching this simply because I’m a big VD fan and I love Joseph Morgan and Daniel Gillies.

4. Gang Related (FOX) Premieres May 2014

This show doesn’t come until mid-season but I liked the premise of it. The story revolves around Ryan Lopez, a gang member sent in to infiltrate the San Francisco Police Department and rise through its ranks. Ryan now has to balance his obligations to his crime family, the gang from his old neighborhood, and deal with his increasing sense of loyalty to his new family, the SFPD’s Gang Task Force. We’ve seen the stories of cops infiltrating a certain crime syndicate so I’m really interested in reverse where a gang member infiltrates a police force. The promo trailer looks really great and the cast looks even better (Love me some Terry O’Quinn).

5. Trophy Wife (ABC) Premieres Tuesday, September 24 @9:30/8:30c

Trophy Wife stars Malin Akerman (Watchmen, Suburgatory) plays Kate, the new trophy wife of Pete (Bradley Whitford; West Wing, Cabin In The Woods). With this marriage Kate gets an instant family and has to deal with Pete’s two ex-wives [Michaela Watkins (Saturday Night Live, Afternoon Delight) and Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River, Damages)] and three-step kids. This show to me is basically if they made a show of Gloria and Jay’s characters on Modern Family and added an extra ex-wife and more kids besides Manny. I really liked this show. I think the cast is great and the kids aren’t too annoying (Annoying kids will kill a show for me). I think it fits in really well with the comedies that work on ABC. It just has a really bad time slot  This show would work better on Wednesdays after Modern Family and away from Tuesday where it is going up against FOX’s Tuesday comedy block. You can catch the première episode before it premieres here as ABC released the episode early online.
